You Have The Right To Change Your Mind At Any Moment!

Updated: Jul 11, 2023

12 years ago, I said that Noddy is the only person I would vote for president and I will never ever change my mind about that!!!

Sounds silly, doesn’t it? I mean, I have no idea what Noddy’s political agendas are or how they feel about the economic climate so how could I vote for them? Also, I’m from the UK and we don’t have a president.

Whilst the example is extreme, this is a prime example of how people can feel as if they need to hold onto what they have previously said. They think by changing their mind they may show themselves as unreliable or feel like their words have less weight.

Well, I am here to tell you a little secret…

Woman who is confused, possibly changing their mind

You have the right to change your mind at any given moment!

That’s right, as of this moment, I am giving you permission to change your mind. Why shouldn’t you be allowed to? People are constantly changing, adapting, gaining new information, new life skills, new ideas, so why should they not be allowed to change their mind?

Picture this, you are a huge grizzly bear fan, you have all the collectables you could have for a grizzly bear; hats, costumes, posters, ornaments, you even have a giant life size bear teddy in your front room. One day, you are walking through the woods and a bear appears, it charges you for and cuts your arm. Are you now going to feel the same way about bears? Maybe? But realistically, probably not.

Okay, I know that is another wild example, let me use one that is a bit more relatable. You say that you do not like a certain band, you have been adamant that you dislike this band for years even though all your friends love them, they have asked you to listen to their song and you listen to one and it doesn’t resonate with you, perfectly fine.

Following this, the band brings out a new album and just by chance you hear a song of theirs on the radio and surprisingly, this resonates with you, in fact you love it and realise that maybe it was just the one song that you didn’t like. So, you go back and listen to it again, and actually, now you are listening to the lyrics more clearly you think it is an incredible piece of art. You listen to more and more of their music and you are just in awe of their musical creations. At this point, are you going to continue to say you don’t like the band because of the past?

We as people can be quite stubborn, and I think we can be quick to judge someone who changes their mind, but it is perfectly natural to do so. Despite what certain people think, people do change, life is not a series of moments that make you a certain way and that is that. It is a journey, with windy paths and twisted roads.

Just remember that people grow, and people fall, meaning people’s minds will change.

So, the next time you are worried about changing your mind because of what people might think, forget about them, because your thoughts are a process and are designed to change and that is okay.
